twin town of Bad Salzungen

The Czech town of Strakonice has been the twin town of Bad Salzungen since the 22nd of April 1977 and is located in South Bohemia at the confluence of the Volynka and Otava rivers, 52 kilometres northwest of the district capital of České Budějovice. Around 23,000 people live in the city, which is characterised by mechanical engineering and the textile industry.

 

Water castle, winter sports and bagpipes

From the 16th century Strakonice was home to a wealthy Jewish community of merchants, the remains of the ghetto and a Jewish cemetery have been preserved. Strakonice also has one of the oldest moated castles in Bohemia. It houses a museum. In the town there is a winter sports stadium with appropriate accommodation.

Guests from all over Europe are invited to the annual International Bagpipe Festival. Other regular events include the Folk Art Festival and the Summer Amphitheatre in the Burggarten.
