Tiefenort

Tiefenort (Diffeshardt) has been a district of Bad Salzungen since 2018. The village covers an area of 34.79 square kilometres and included the districts of Dönges, Hämbach, Oberrohn with the settlements Hüttenhof and Röhrigshof, Unterrohn and Weißendiez.

The village was first mentioned in a document in 1137 - from the Bad Hersfeld monastery. The development of the village and the lives of its inhabitants were closely linked to and largely dependent on the Krayenburg. The owners of the castle were the lords of Frankenstein. Already during their lifetime, the abbots of Hersfeld had their large property in Tiefenort administered by feudal lords.

These and the later owners of the office Krayenburg have not only shaped the castle, but also Tiefenort. The Krayenburg is an important sight of Tiefenort. The building was first mentioned in 1155 as the "castrum" of Hersfeld Monastery. The owners of the castle were the lords of Frankenstein, who held the castle as a fief and extended it further.

On the local cemetery a cemetery with a monument commemorates 25 Soviet and six Polish forced labourers and their two children, who were deported to Germany during the Second World War and became victims of forced labour. In addition, seven soldiers of the Red Army are resting there.

The zeppelin stone in the corridor on the watch near Tiefenort commemorates the emergency landing and end of the naval airship L 55 on the 20th of October 1917.
